Homecoming Week 2010 is approaching, and it is bringing with it many events for the Southeastern campus community to take part in.
One event in particular is the annual “A Ton of Fun Food Drive,” which will take place in the Student Union Mall on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Donations will be accepted before Thursday as well, and these can be brought to Jackie Dale Thomas, director of Leadership Development and Student Activities, in the Student Union, Room 110.
The food drive is sponsored by the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, which has sponsored the event for 15 years.
“The Dream Team, the group who for 20 years has planned student Homecoming events, felt that we needed a service component to Homecoming,” said Thomas.
All donations go to the Tangi Food Pantry, which is an organization that collects food and funds to provide for those in need.
“There have been times when we have literally walked into empty shelves which would have meant people going away hungry if not for the generosity of our campus,” said Thomas. “This year it is especially important. Due to more families in Louisiana needing help due to the oil spill, food pantries everywhere are really stretched to the limits; all donations would be very helpful.”
Cash or check donations will also be accepted to help purchase additional food. Checks can be written out to Gamma Phi Beta and written out to “Southeastern Louisiana University; SLU 10414; Hammond, LA 70402.”
