The Student Government Association (SGA) is having a competition to find the best Homecoming logo design. The designs are due by noon on Monday, September 26 and must be submitted to the SGA Office. The winner will receive a $100 award.
The competition is new this year and is designed to get people excited about Homecoming. Students interested in submitting a logo should incorporate this year’s Homecoming theme, ‘Roomie Takes a Road Trip’ as well as the organizations and their themes into their design. Anyone is eligible to submit a design whether representing themselves or their organization. The design should be submitted on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper.
“Our hope is that this [the logo competition] is going to be a lasting thing,” said Luke Holloway, SGA President and Dream Team chairman. “We want this year’s Homecoming to be better than last year’s Homecoming and next year’s Homecoming to be better than this year’s Homecoming.”
The Dream Team and SGA are teaming up this year to expand homecoming. While the Homecoming Committee is in charge of coming up with ideas, SGA will help more with advertising and publicity. SGA is able to execute Dream Team’s plans as a result of their funding which comes from student fees.
“Since SGA is taking the coordinating spot over Homecoming, we will be able to do more stuff,” said William Takewell, SGA Chief Justice. “We’re going to be able to have door hangers on people’s dorm rooms, flyers to hand out to people, brochures and stuff like that.”
The University Homecoming Committee, Division for Student Affairs Homecoming Committee and the Dream Team are the organizations responsible for making Homecoming week possible.
Dr. Marvin Yates, vice president for Division of Student Affairs presented the logo competition idea in one of the Homecoming Committee meetings in hopes of improving the advertising for Homecoming events.
“Getting publicity is something that Luke and I have both been very adamant about for the past two years that we’ve worked with homecoming,” said Takewell.
The Homecoming Committee along with some outside people will convene to choose the best design.
“SGA is trying to get people to associate Homecoming with the Homecoming theme for the year,” said Takewell. “Every year there is a theme, but most people don’t know what it is.”
