A popular childhood game resurfaced for many students when Campus Activities Board (CAB) brought back a tournament event featuring rock-paper-scissors. The event took place on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Cayman Café, where Southeastern students competed in a rock-paper-scissors single-elimination tournament.
“We chose to do rock-paper-scissors because it’s quick and easy, something that everyone knows how to do,” said Breanna Malancon, CAB student assistant.
The tournament began at noon, so many students came during their lunch breaks to test their skills, competing for a three-foot trophy and the title of Southeastern’s own rock-paper-scissors champion.
The end of the tournament found the final two contenders in freshman accounting major Tammy Stewart and freshman Victoria Prather. Ultimately, Stewart took the title as champion, cutting Prather’s paper with her scissors.
“I never play this game much, so winning it is an honor, and I would like to thank everyone who believed in me,” said Stewart. “Feels good to win!”
The rock-paper-scissors tournaments have been held by CAB for more than five years, though without consistency. This is because the tournament is a reserve event, one that is kept on as an idea that may or may not be implemented during the semester. According to CAB Coordinator Jason Leader, the last time a rock-paper-scissors tournament was held was this past spring semester.
While it usually takes place in the Student Union Mall, the tournament was held at Cayman Café as a change of pace, to bring a different lunch crowd.
“It was fun,” said Malancon. “It was something different.”
CAB provides campus events for all Southeastern students each semester. More information on upcoming events can be found on the CAB Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cabslu. Interested students can text “CAB” to 68398 to receive weekly updates on CAB events.
