The Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association hosted Golden Silence, a program to honor deceased Southeastern alumni, students, faculty and staff that passed away over the last year.
The candlelight ceremony was scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the Student Union Park and was open to the public.
“I think that this is a nice ceremony,” said Kevin Bartholomew, a senior majoring in small business management. “It is great that they honor the deceased at my school.”
Every year for the past 14 years, the Golden Silence ceremony has been held for those who wish to have their loved ones remembered.
“We hold this ceremony every year because one of Southeastern’s core values is caring and these people who are our family for life,” said Alumni Director Kathy Pittman.
“All of the names on this list are from those who have passed on this year, and that is still too many,” said Pittman.
There were 140 names on the list from this year’s Golden Silence ceremony.
The ceremony began with the opening remarks by University President Dr. John L. Crain.
“Hearing someone’s name at the ceremony is a nice way for those who have lost family and friends throughout the year,” said Crain. “The ceremony was short and simple but it means a lot to those who have lost family and friends.”
After welcoming everyone, the memorial roll call was given and everyone had their candles lit.
The ROTC program from Hammond high school performed the flag ceremony.
The program was brought to an end when Julie Perise, the assistant director of Alumni relations, led everyone in attendance through the school Alma Mater.
