The University Health Center is working to offer a comfortable environment for nursing mothers.
Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Jim McHodgkins was made aware of the lack of places for nursing mothers after receiving an email.
“The mother wanted to know if there was anywhere on campus she could be comfortable enough to breastfeed or pump breast milk,” said McHodgkins. “We are working to provide this type of location on campus.”
Nurse Practitioner and Health Center Director Andrea Peevy and McHodgkins discussed possible accommodations that could be made for mothers.
“We will always have a space available,” said Peevy. “So, if somebody comes in and needs to pump breast milk, they can certainly have the privacy of, like, my office, which would be fine. We may also have an empty exam room at the time that they can use.”
If a nursing mother is seeking these accommodations, contact the University Health Center at 985-549-2242. The center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Fridays.
