Over the weekend, the Lady Lions earned a spot in the Tuscaloosa regional with a historic regular season that dominated the Southland Conference, with only four losses to conference opponents.
After Southeastern’s regular season ended with a 2-1 loss to Lamar in its own SLC tournament bracket, SLU hoped its resume was enough to secure a spot for postseason action.
In the regular season, the Lady Lions led the nation in shutouts and triples and held the longest win streak in the nation, 25 games over conference opponents.
Early in the season, the team earned itself the nickname “giant killers” from Texas softball coach Mike White after it took down No. 5 Oregon in the 2026 NFCA Leadoff Classic on MLB Network.
Once Southeastern won out in the 2026 Mardi Gras Mambo and 2026 Michelle Short and Adam Brown Memorial Collegiate Classic, it faced the toughest portion of its schedule when the team went on an 11-game away slate, where it fell to No. 3 Texas Longhorns, UTSA and Texas State in a series.
Coach Fremin and his team would pivot, though, after giving up two more against Sam Houston and Oklahoma when they defeated UT Arlington and swept East Texas A&M.
This led to a historic season that put them on a pedestal for the Tuscaloosa regional, hosted by No. 1 Alabama, featuring Belmont and USC Upstate.
The “giant killers” are expected to create some upsets once again as they enter the postseason with an impressive .341 batting average and a 1.69 ERA on the mound.
SLU is particularly well-regarded after eliminating LSU in its own house at the 2025 Baton Rouge Regional and is known for its other postseason upset against Clemson in 2023.
Southeastern will play its first match against Belmont this Friday, May 15, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., live on ESPN+.
