Horacio Leon, a junior marketing major from Santiago, Chile, was named the Southland Conference Men’s Golfer of the Month for October 2010.
“I don’t remember not playing golf,” said Leon. “It’s just something I’ve always done. My dad was a professional golfer back in Chile. And I always looked up to him and back where I’m from boys want to do what their father does. And that’s why I play golf, to do what he did.”
At the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Classic in Choudrant, LA, Leon was awarded individual honors by seven stokes and helped the Southeastern team come in second place. Also at this tournament, Leon finished with a personal best of 208, which is seven strokes better than any of his previous finishes. According to a Nov. 3 Athletics Media Relations press release, this victory “marked the third straight first place finish by a Southeaster golfer since 2009-10 joining Cedric Scotto who claimed medalist honors in two events last season.”
At the LSU/David Toms Invitational, he came in sixteenth place and helped Southeastern take a sixth place victory. During these two events, Leon averaged 70.33 in all six rounds.
According to Leon, he was thrilled with being chosen to receive this award.
“I’m very happy that I was picked for this honor,” said Leon. “It’s quite cool to see that all your hard work does pay off in the end. Like I said it’s really cool and I’m very excited.”
Head Coach for the Southeastern golf team Tim Baldwin was also very excited about Leon’s achievements and the upcoming events in the spring.
“I’m very happy with his achievement,” said Baldwin. “He’s been working very hard and managing himself very well. It’s a much-deserved merit. I’m hoping he’ll take his momentum from the fall and help us defend our title in the spring.”
