The Lady Lions Volleyball team started their season with the annual Green and Gold game last night, Wednesday, August 22 at the University Center. The game split the team in two for a four-set scrimmage.
Junior Cherish Krohn hit the opening serve for the Green team who went on to win the first two sets of 25-22 and 25-20. The Gold team came back from defeat and toppled the Green team in the closing two sets scoring 25-14 and 25-22.
Seniors Courtney Donald and Taylor Buckner dominated the offense for the Green team. Donald ended the game with 14 kills and five digs. Buckner managed to match Donald in kills and added 14 digs.
Although the Lady Lions were pleased with their performance and look forward to the season, they recognize their strengths and weaknesses and are eager to fix unwanted errors.
“We have been working hard and scrimmaging each other these past two weeks,” said Donald. “I think it was a good performance to start the season with, but there’s definitely lots of room for improvement.”
Several new members to the Lady Lions made their college debut and head coach Geno Frugoli was impressed.
“I think our newcomers tonight showed a lot of heart,” said Frugoli, “They did a lot of great plays that fit in our system well. When they get comfortable, they’re going to do some damage for us.”
The Lady Lions will travel to Alabama for action next week against Alabama State in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup, before their first game for Lady Lion fans at the University Center against Grambling State.
“We’ll have a good time in Alabama,” said Donald. “We’ll get to play away from our home crowd and get the nerves out before we play against Grambling. We’ll be ready to face our opponents.”
