Lady Lion volleyball head coach Geno Frugoli finished his first season at the helm for Southeastern this weekend against Northwestern State in a four set loss on Thursday, Nov. 10 and versus Central Arkansas in a five set loss that Saturday.
“It has been a learning experience for us,” Frugoli said about this season.
Thursday’s match saw the Lady Lions play the Lady Demons four sets. Southeastern dropped a close first set 23-25, but managed to rebound in the third set, taking it at 25-22.
The Lady Lions continued their road trip on Saturday heading to Conway, AK to face the Sugar Bears of UCA. The match went to the wire as the Lady Lions took the Sugar Bears all five sets, eventually falling 2-3. Southeastern passed their previous season-high with 17 blocks on the night.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a big lead in the first set 15-7, but the Sugar Bears answered with a 15-2 run taking the set 22-25. The second set saw 12 tie scores and six lead changes. The Lady Lions finished the set with 17 kills in route to a 28-26 win.
In the third set the Lady Lions took their second consecutive set. The team established an eight-point lead and after a kill from middle blocker Courtney Donald the Lady Lions claimed the set, 19-11.
The Lady Lions went on to drop two consecutive sets and were eventually defeated in the fifth set.
This season, Frugoli took the Lady Lions to five wins, including consecutive against Grambling and ULM. According to Frugoli, this season was hard on him and the team, but never the less a step in the right direction.
“That’s a good sign that were going in the right direction because you have to get to these situations before you can overcome them,” said Frugoli. “This first year you get there a lot and next year you start winning in those situations.”
