Lady Lions ready to rock the court

This year the Lady Lions look to bring game to the court with a season that is sure to be full of exciting matches, not to mention the addition of five new players to their already impressive, diverse and fierce line up.

They will open the season with a doubleheader against Millsaps College, at 5:45 p.m. on Nov. 12. According to head coach Lori Davis Jones, a former Lady Lion herself, for their preseason the ladies are looking to start off on a good foot with five out of the first seven games being played here on the home court.

“We plan to start the tempo there and keep it up all season,” said Jones.

Also planned for the season is the anticipated game against ULL, which according to Jones is always a fun and exciting interstate rivalry, and as always, the journey to Oxford, Miss. to play the Rebels of Ole Miss, as well as a shot at redemption for their loss last year.

This year, the Lady Lions have completely renovated their strategy, adding a more defensive line up as well as priority on where they may have fallen short in past years.

“I am very excited about this season, we have a new style of play and we should be a lot of fun to watch. We have a lot of potential to do a lot of great things,” said guard (and team captain) Chelsea Lynn Hix.  “I think we will bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm, we are all ready to start the season.”

But even with the ever growing anticipation and excitement that leads to the first games of the season, there is still a long way to go to the NCAA.

“I look forward to every game on the schedule, but we have to rake it one step at a time to become better and champions,” said guard Kelli Jenkins.

“Its going to be a challenge, on both the coaching staff and the players because we have changed everything up,” said Jones.  “But it will definitely allow the team to grow offensively. It’s a growing process for us and for them, and I couldn’t think of a better group to handle that process.”

Though even in the face of challenge, Jones and the Lady Lions have a positive outlook on the season ahead.

“I love it! Our seniors and team leaders have done a great job. They have a great energy at practice and positive enthusiasm,” said Jones.

Our focus this season is to win the East Division, which would be our third, win the conference tournament, which would be the first ever and the compete in the NCAA.

“I think the biggest strength of this team is our team chemistry on and off the court. We all have so much fun and enjoy playing and being around each other, this is definitely one of our biggest strengths,” said Hix.

It is the hope of the team that again this season the Southeastern student body can come out and get caught up in the excitement as well as fierce competition that they bring to every home game.
