Lion football (8-2, 5-0 SLC) continued their winning streak with their seventh consecutive win of the season and the first win in history at the University of Central Arkansas.
Southeastern gained a 7-0 lead early in the game after sophomore running back Xavier Roberson earned a 90-yard kickoff return.
With his third kickoff return for a touchdown, Roberson set a new single-season school record and now holds the record in Southland Conference after earning his fifth career kickoff return score.
Although the Lions had a tough start, the momentum changed at the end of the second half with a goal line stand leading into great plays in the second half of the game. Senior linebacker Cqulin Hubert blocked a field goal to maintain the lead.
“That was a great play by Drew Misita and the defense, and the D-line did a real good job by stopping those guys,” said Hubert. “The field goal, I give that to my D-linemen they had a great push. I came free and made the play.”
The Southeastern defense caused two turnovers in the third quarter and contributed to the change in momentum. Sophomore Harlan Miller returned his third interception this season by bringing the score to 31-17 in a little more than a minute into the third quarter. Junior linebacker Justin Church established another score for the Lions with a fumble recovery, contributing to the 58-31 win over the nationally ranked (5-5, 2-3 SLC)Bears. Church, defensive linemen Jacob Newman and Greg Triay were present on the field for the defense, all earning sacks for the Lions.
“Like I tell my boys all the time, defense wins championships,” added Hubert. “It was real big for the defense to come out. We knew after the second half that we had to come out and make a big stop that would be the most important down and series of the game tonight. We came out and executed.”
Junior quarterback, Bryan Bennett, gained a season-high 343 yards on the ground, 545 total yards during the game, rushed for a career-high 142 yards on 17 carries and contributed two touchdowns. Bennett currently holds the second highest number of rushing touchdowns of Lion football history with 13.
The Lions will return to play against No. 6/7 ranked Sam Houston State in Strawberry Stadium on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Southland Television Network and KSLU 90.9 FM, in addition to Kajun 107.1 FM and The Joint 104.7 FM.
“There’s another huge game for us next week and we can’t enjoy this one too long because we have a huge game next Saturday,” said Head Coach Ron Roberts. “We’re treading on some new water and we just have to make sure we handle it right and we respond the right way every time.”
A win against defending SLC champions, Sam Houston, will take the Lions one step closer to the conference championship and the first FCS playoff appearance. The Bearkats (8-2, 4-1 SLC) will enter the contest with three consecutive wins since a loss to the McNeese State Cowboys on Oct. 19.
“It’s not about them, it’s all about us,” said Hubert. “I know we can’t come out like we came out this game. We’re going to go to practice. We’re going to practice hard and we’re going to come out and we’re going to execute.”
