In addition to preparations for the 2014 football season, head Coach Ron Roberts, takes time to build relationships and potential players of future teams at coach’s clinics and football camps.
Roberts and members of his staff kicked off Super Lion Saturday, following practice on Friday April 11, from 3-8 p.m. and continued from 8-11 a.m., the next morning prior to the Spring Game. The clinic invited coaches from local high schools and community colleges to benefit from instruction on running a football program and coaching basics.
Roberts explained the goals of the clinic and his hopes for its impact.
“It’s really to get some high school coaches on campus to get to know our coaches a little better and show them what our program is all about,” Roberts said. “Hopefully we can help them out with football.”
Guest speakers, including coaches from surrounding high schools, were invited to share their knowledge. Presenters included Glen Davis, Head Coach of the Copiah-Lincoln Community College football program, University of Southern Mississippi Running Backs Coach John Simon and Itawamba Community College Defensive Coordinator Sean Cannon.
“We went with a couple guys that were well known,” said Roberts. “Hank Tierney [Head coach of Ponchatoula High School] is coming in; he’s pretty much a legend in the state of Louisiana high school coaching. He’s been doing it for a long time. The coach from Franklinton, Shane Smith is coming in here; again a guy we think pretty highly of. He’s a pretty good football coach.”
Roberts explained that the clinic was a two-part system in helping coaches in attendance.
“It’s two parts in that, one, they share their knowledge, but the two is it’ll hopefully give them an opportunity and our high school coaches an opportunity to make some contacts with junior colleges,” Roberts said. “There are a lot of kids in the state of Louisiana, obviously, that don’t get the opportunity to go to [play] four year ball, and they need a place to go.”
Although the spring game is behind the Lions, there is more work inside and outside of Lion football to be done. Roberts and his staff will host a series of youth, high school and senior camps throughout the spring and summer.
“It’s all about getting prospects and potential prospects on campus and showing them what we’re all about,” said Roberts. “It’s really about trying to get as many high school athletes exposed to Southeastern as possible.”
Camps will begin on May 30 with the first high school session and end with the second session of youth camps on July 22. All camps will be open to the public for viewing.
