The Lady Lions traveled to Stephen F. Austin last Friday to take on the undefeated Ladyjacks in the Southland Conference.
After the Ladyjacks scored all three goals in the second half, the Lions fell short and were not able to compensate ending the game with a final score of 3-0. The Lions are now 4-3 in the league.
According to head coach Blake Hornbuckle, stand out players Friday night included freshman midfielder Maggie Ramsey and junior midfielder Gisenia Utreras from Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
The game was scoreless until SFA senior forward Zuri Prince shot past sophomore goalie Casey Jeanfreau upping the score to 1-0. Assisted from sophomore midfielder Hailey Hunt, sophomore forward Amanda Doyle was able to double the SFA score, 2-0. With a minute left in the game, senior midfielder Christie Hinojosa soared a corner kick to end the game with a final of 3-0 giving SFA another win.
“We were pleased with the efforts of our backline,” said head coach Blake Hornbuckle. “Things didn’t go our way in the second half, but we have to regroup and get ready for Sunday.”
Hoping to redeem themselves, the Lions traveled to Northwestern State University on Sunday to challenge the Demons in conference play.
The game ended in a tie 2-2; however, after two minutes into overtime, sophomore forward Bri Singh scored the winning goal giving the Lady Lions a final score of 3-2.
The Lady Lions ended the first half of the game 1-0 as senior Jen Babcock assisted junior Cheyenne Maxwell giving her an opportunity to shoot into the lower left corner of the net.
In the 66th minute of regulation play, NSU junior midfielder Casssandra Briscoe was given a penalty kick tying the game 1-1 and making this her third goal of the season.
With less than 10 minutes left to play, Utreras’s fourth goal of the season gave the Lady Lions the upper hand with a score of 2-1.
However, NSU was not ready to give up as Briscoe received a pass from freshman midfielder Cache Haley, ending regulation time 2-2.
The Lions ended the game as Maxwell assisted Singh on a shot that went by NSU freshman goalkeeper Alex Latham and into the net.
This game’s leading players were Maxwell with four shots, three assists and one goal, Utreras and Singh both having three shots and one goal and Babcock partaking in three shots on goal and one assist.
Also, Singh’s season goals and points total are among the top single season performances in history. She has 22 career goals, tying her with former Southeastern players Karly Dagys and Ashley Strine for eighth place on the university’s career list.
Lady Lions will host Sam Houston on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex. Prior to kick off Sunday afternoon, Babcock and Villaescusa will be recognized for Senior Day.
