The Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG) will be holding its Visual Arts Juried Student Exhibition beginning on March 14.
As one of three exhibitions displayed this semester, all visual art students are allowed to submit work to be juried.
“It’s available for all art students who are currently taking class in the art department,” said Gallery Director Dale Newkirk. “The show is an opportunity for the students to exhibit their work. But it’s also a way that the art department shows what we do here in all of our classes.”
In addition to acting as an all-inclusive student exhibition, the show is also open to all mediums of art. Graphic design, photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking and new media and animation will be accepted for judgment.
Accordingly, two jurors have been named to put their stamp of approval on all pieces.
Paul Dean, a typography, color theory and graphic design history professor at Louisiana State University (LSU), is one of the jurors. The second of the jurors is Evert Witte, a native of the Netherlands who now lives in New Orleans and has fine art on display at the Cole Pratt Gallery on Magazine Street.
The selection of two distinctly diverse jurors is done intentionally with the purpose of having various viewpoints and expert findings, according to Newkirk.
“I always try to have a fine artist and a graphic designer because those two sensibilities are very different,” said Newkirk.
Moreover, the jurors do not intend to judge artwork as if it were all on identical levels.
“When the judges come, they’re told that they don’t look at that equally,” said Newkirk. “They don’t look at a foundation person, which is the first year of studying in art, the same as you would a senior. That wouldn’t be fair. We make sure that we have a representation in the show of all these different levels from freshman to senior and all areas are represented.”
The deadline for visual art students to enter artwork was Feb. 25.
The opening reception for the exhibit will be held on March 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the CAG. The student presentation will be open for viewing until April 11.
