The Manchac Review, the English department’s creative writing journal and Sigma Tau Delta, Southeastern’s English honor society invites students to participate in Poetry Slam World’s End Café located across the street from Southeastern Hall. It will begin on Thursday, April 5 and will end after the last performance is complete. The cafe will provide limited refreshments. Students are encouraged to attend and enjoy a night of creativity and expression.
“We just really want to encourage students to create and come out and express themselves,” said Justin Greer, editor of the Manchac Review and president of Sigma Tau Delta. “That’s what creative writing is all about.”
Students who wish to share will be able to sign up when they arrive and a schedule will be developed as participants sign in.
Sigma Tau Delta and the Manchac Review are hoping to reverse the decline in participation that the event faced in previous years. Because it is an open mic night, the publication and organization do not know how many people to expect but anticipate students who have been published in the review or presented at a conference.
“It could be 5 people it could be 20,” added Greer. “We would like to have at least five participants. It will probably be people who are already published in the Manchac Review and students who have presented at the Sigma Tau Delta Conference.”
The Manchac Review recently transferred from traditional print to an online publication and are hoping that the Poetry Slam will encourage more people to get involved, generate more submissions and allow it to have a larger format. Two publications have been circulated online and a summer issue is in process.
Depending on the success of the event, it may become a monthly or bimonthly event for students to participate in and enjoy. The information board for the English honor society will be set up for students to view and applications will be available.
Sigma Tau Delta is open for undergraduates of all majors and is not limited to English. The society meets every other Thursday. During their meetings, they discuss a variety of literature topics, upcoming events and plans for its annual conference. Membership is open to upperclassmen that have a commendable GPA in their core curriculum and English courses. For more information on the Manchac Review, visit english.selu.edu/manchacreview.
