Like the fragrant mix of dried leaves, herbs and petals in a bowl of potpourri, the upcoming installment of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts’ Chamber Series promises to be a varied musical experience. Entitled “Musical Potpourri,” it will give the Fine and Performing Arts faculty a chance to display their skills and collaborate with one another.
Dr. Kenneth Boulton, the interim department head, professor of piano and a Grammy-nominated pianist, shared the purpose of the Chamber Series, which is meant to enrich the faculty performing in the show just as much as it does the audience watching them, for it gives them the chance to work together in an artistic setting.
“This series was designed to give students an opportunity to see our exceptional faculty in performance, as well as [to allow] our faculty to collaborate artistically, which is something we always cherish,” said Boulton.
The concert promises to live up to its namesake, as it will be offering a variety of instrumental combinations and music, according to Boulton.
“We have a variety of instrumental combinations planned for this recital, including two works for brass quintet, plus several additional pieces for more unusual mixings,” said Boulton. “One work is written for clarinet, horn, and two percussionists, while the other features flute, trombone, baritone singer and piano.”
Excepting Boulton, the faculty to perform in the recital are as follows: Dr. Dave Johansen, Dr. Logan Place, Dr. Brian Gallion, Ms. Arisia Gilmore, Dr. Stephen Rushing, Ms. Suzanne Buerkle, Mr. Victor Dreacher, Dr. Guy Gauthreaux and Mr. Kevin Estoque.
This is not the end of the great things the Department of Fine and Performing Arts has planned for the remainder of the season and for the next season of the upcoming semester. While there will be only one faculty chamber recital for every semester, Boulton explained that there will be more concerts to come for the enjoyment of the student body as well as anyone else who wishes to attend.
“We have scheduled one feature Faculty Chamber Recital during the course of each semester. We are already planning several great concerts for next season,” said Boulton.
