Residential Assistant (RA) and junior business administration major Alex Rogers published his first book, “I’m Only Human After All,” over the summer break.
The book is the first in a series of three novels that focuses on Roger’s personal experiences with bullying and cyber-bullying while touching on other issues such as self-worth, trust, betrayal, acceptance and sibling rivalry. Rogers hopes that his book will help and inspire young adults who can relate to some of the experiences he wrote about, which directly come from Rogers’s personal life.
“In my life I have come to understand that all people should be treated as equals,” said Rogers. “And if we are to move positively in any emotion, it should be in love.”
Juggling classes, homework, jobs, a social life and a personal life while writing a book, was quite a challenge for Rogers, but he found a way to get it done.
“Some days I would write for like five hours, and other days I would write for like 10 minutes,” said Rogers. “Time management is a struggle, especially when you’re in school.”
Rogers continually wrote and edited his book since he first came up with the concept when he was 17. After finishing the novel it took a year to get it published.
“I’m Only Human After All” was the first book published by Rogers, though it was not the first book he wrote.
Rogers’ journey to becoming a writer began at the age of seven when he wrote a book that was 70 pages long. However, over time, the book was lost.
All writers write for different reasons; Rogers’ reason is a desire to help others.
“Through my writing I’m able to connect and help others cope with similar issues as well as bring these issues into question,” said Rogers. “It’s like therapy in a way.”
In the book, Rogers revisits hurtful memories of his past, which made the writing process grueling.
“It brought me to some places, but it was worth it,” said Rogers. “The end result was greater than what I went through in writing it.”
While the book was written to teach others, Rogers learned a few lessons of his own.
“The best lesson I’ve learned is to follow your dreams,” said Rogers, “I’m doing what I wanted to do, but there are many people who don’t. If you’re not really impacting the world, then you’re not really doing anything with your time. I learned how to live life with a purpose.”
Copies of the novel can be found at the University Bookstore, Barnes and Noble and amazon.com.
