Due to a recent lack of participation by students, the Phi Beta Delta chapter has decided to end the organization.
Phi Beta Delta is an honor society developed to support international scholars, or American scholars who have studied abroad or have interests in international affairs. The organization was started in the spring of 2011, but dwindled in membership and participation following graduation of seniors who were originally involved.
The purpose of the organization was to spread awareness for international education and internationalism,” said Brendan Daigle, International affairs coordinator. “We did several activities to promote intermingling and interacting, but it was difficult to recruit members. No one showed interest in joining, and there was no participation from those who were original members. It’s up to students if they have interest and want to get it going again.”
The society has left over materials from the past two semesters available to interested organizations. Although much of the supplies have already been claimed, the remaining materials are offered to anyone interested.
The future of Phi Beta Delta is unknown, but the organization could possibly reappear on campus. Daigle expressed solitude in the decision to dissolve the chapter, believing it had the potential to produce positive effects.
“You can’t do anything without anybody participating,” explained Daigle. “If other students show enough interest and are motivated it may be started again. I put out fliers, sent emails, put stuff on our website and everything else trying to get interest from students. We have to have student interest to get it active.”
For more information on materials available contact Daigle at 985-549-3850 or visit her office in the Student Union, Room 206.
