Columbia Theatre has taken a break from the classical productions in exchange for a modern show. Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds will be visiting the theatre on Thursday, October 22.
Singer and songwriter Arleigh Kincheloe moved to New York City in 2008 to start Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds. According to the band’s website, over the years, they have performed at more than 600 shows, released two full-length albums and have worked with Randy Jackson.
Besides vocalist Kincheloe, other band members include her brother Jackson Kincheloe on the harmonica, guitarist Sasha Brown, bass player Josh Myers, trumpet player Phil Rodriguez, saxophonist Brian Graham and drummer Dan Boyden.
Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds strive on the fact that they are a family, and many of their songs stem from this theme.
The band explores the blending of rock, blues, gospel and soul. On the website, Kincheloe expresses the music as “loud, fun and it’s supposed to make you feel good.”
Currently, the band is on tour and is making stops in various cities across the nation. Other cities include Atlanta, Memphis, Pittsburgh and Denver.
Columbia Theatre’s operations and production technical assistant David Avelar II stumbled across Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds while planning to book another act. Avelar feels the band will be enjoyable to everyone who attends.
“Sister Sparrow is really fun, and they’re on tour right now,” said Avelar. “Hammond is the only stop [Sister Sparrow] is making in Louisiana, and it’s a big deal they’re coming to Columbia.”
Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Bird’s most recent album is “The Weather Below” released on May 18, 2015. The album features songs including “Sugar,” “Mama Knows” and “Catch Me if You Can.”
Past records include “Fight” (2013), “Pound of Dirt” (2012) and “Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds” (2010).
Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds is a part of the New Artist Concert Series at the Colombia Theatre. Other upcoming bands in the series include Grace Weber, The Bros. Landreth and Sierra Hull.
“It is important for college students to know that Columbia offers various things,” said Avelar. “I think Sister Sparrow will be a great event and encourage them [students] to come.”
