The well-known 24-Hour Computer Lab, formerly located in Tinsley Hall 101, has returned to its original home in Fayard Hall.
The new lab officially opened Monday, Aug. 6 in Fayard Hall 126. The relocation was made due to space availability, student convenience, size improvement and fulfillment of a promise made to the students.
“The most important thing for me is that we promised the students that the lab will move back to Fayard,” said Mike Asoodeh, chief information officer. “We want our students to succeed. The students need computers and technology to succeed, so we make sure that happens.”
The lab capacity has nearly doubled as a result of the relocation to Fayard, which provides a larger space. The new lab has an adjacent overflow room with 34 computers in addition to the central room which contains 42 computers for a total of 76 computers.
“It’s the same 24-hour lab, it’s just larger and in a more convenient location for the students,” said Asoodeh. “We’re thinking about other ideas so the students can go there and have all their questions answered.”
The lab provides a number of services to students including equipment checkout, computers, printers and the Student Help Desk. Students can check out equipment such as laptops, digital cameras, video cameras and projectors. However, the equipment has not yet been moved to the Fayard location. According to Clarissa Sampey, Student Productivity Services coordinator, the equipment should be moved within the next few weeks. The equipment is still available to be checked out at Tinsley Hall 102.
The Student Help Desk is available to answer all technology related questions both in person and over the phone.
The name “24-Hour Lab” was labeled by the students when the lab was first opened in 1998. There had never before been a lab opened all night. While the lab is open 24 hours a day, it is not open seven days a week. A full hours of operation list can be found on the Student Productivity Services (SPS) website at selu.edu/sps.
The lab was moved from its original location in Fayard four years ago, giving up the space for the Math Redesign Project. The coordinator of SPS promised the students that the lab would be relocated to Fayard as soon as availability presented itself. The lab has been relocated to the same room with the addition of an overflow lab.
“I’m so glad the lab is back in Fayard because it smells like a normal building,” said Kyle Berry, a senior majoring in biology and French.
