The Southeastern Division for Student Affairs offers students opportunities to get involved on campus and gain valuable skills. There are more than 150 recognized student and Greek organizations welcoming students with various academic and professional interests.
The Interfraternity Council has made changes to its spring recruitment activities, and have given interested males the opportunity to learn more about Greek life and the chapters offered at Southeastern with its first interfraternal convocation.
During the convocation, all active chapters of the Interfraternity Council will prepare presentations no longer than five minutes so that attendees will learn more about each chapter’s values. Each student will leave with informational handouts and brochures that include material about each fraternity and their rush week activities.
“We wanted the spring recruitment process to have more organization,” said Stephen Davis, IFC president. “It’s usually a free for all. This way people interested can see all of the fraternities, what the ideals of each fraternity are and why they should be a part of each fraternity.”
Although the convocation was planned by IFC, each chapter is responsible for recruitment activities for their individual chapters.
Leland Yates, IFC vice-president, created the idea of hosting the convocation after being elected in November.
“I started throwing this idea around when I first took office in November,” said Yates. “I got really positive feedback from other chapters, so we decided to move ahead with it in December. Usually spring recruitment is just a free-for-all meaning each chapter is responsible for getting their own word out and completely on their own. I made this change to help some of the new guys wanting to rush in the spring get more information on each different fraternity.”
With goals of increasing interest and membership in the Interfraternity Council, Yates expressed his hopes for the program.
“Since this is brand new, and spring recruitment at Southeastern is always smaller, I would love to shoot for having 30 to 40 [students] at the convocation on February 3 and for each chapter to extend at least five bids.”
Males interested in joining a fraternity in the IFC can find out more information by contacting the Assistant Director of Student Engagement, Kyle Gallagher at stephen.gallagher@selu.edu or Davis through email at stephen.davis-3@selu.edu. All members of the IFC must maintain a 2.3 semester GPA, in addition to a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Other requirements are established by each fraternity.
