At the 34th Annual Division for Student Affairs Awards Convocation, organizations and individual students were honored with awards for excellence in service and leadership on campus. Among those awarded were graduating seniors Mary Takewell as DSA Outstanding Woman of the Year and Tim Reling as DSA Outstanding Man of the Year.
“Both Tim Reling and Mary Takewell are well deserving of the DSA Man and Woman of the Year awards,” said Kyle Gallagher, assistant director of Student Engagement. “They have demonstrated their deep commitment to Southeastern Louisiana University time and time again. The Division for Student Affairs will always be grateful for the impact that each had on the students, staff and faculty of Southeastern Louisiana University.”
Takewell served as the 2013-14 Student Government Association Chief Justice and has been highly involved on campus in Theta Phi Alpha Sorority and many other organizations during her four years at Southeastern.
“Overall, I’ve enjoyed every aspect of being involved with the Division of Student Affairs,” said Takewell. “If I had to choose one of my favorites, I’d say it would be The Big Event. I’ve loved being a part of it from its start here on Southeastern’s campus and seeing it grow into the event it is today has been amazing.”
Although she is graduating this semester, Takewell plans to stay involved with Southeastern as an active alumnus while obtaining a graduate degree in social work. She plans to use all that she has learned from Southeastern faculty, staff and students in her graduate work and future profession.
Although Reling will be finishing his undergraduate degree at Southeastern, he will immediately begin graduate school while working as a graduate assistant for the Office of Student Conduct and taking on the role of Takewell’s replacement as SGA Chief Justice.
“My personal favorite moments volunteering within the Division of Student Affairs involved my time working as a DSA Leadership Ambassador, during which we hosted the Emerging Leaders Retreat,” said Reling, a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. “During this time, I had the opportunity to connect with underclassmen as we challenged them to further develop their leadership potential. I made a lot of long-lasting relationships with these students, many of [whom] I still keep in contact with today.”
Reling also noted he enjoyed his time working on the Student Conduct Hearing Board prior to becoming a student worker in the Office of Student Conduct because it gave him the opportunity to help make the campus a safer place for all students.
At the convocation, Reling was inducted as the 2014-15 SGA Chief Justice. In addition, Alexis Quackenbush was inducted as the SGA Vice President and Stephanie Travis as SGA President.
The Greek Man and Woman of the Year were awarded to Delta Tau Delta Fraternity member Christopher Simoneaux and Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority member Kayla Hoover.
Hoover also received the L.I.V.E., Code Award for Student Conduct. Jacqueline Hayes, a Graduate student in counseling education of marriage, couple and family counseling, was awarded the Outstanding Student Service Award.
This year, 47 students were awarded the Green “S” Award for their contributions to student life. Reling, Takewell and Simoneaux were among those honored with the Green “S” Award.
Thirty-three students were named to the national honors program Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities list. Reling was named to the 2014 Who’s Who list along with Jasmine Tate, the Assistant Editor of The Lion’s Roar newspaper and president of the Public Relations Student Society of America. Tate was also named the 2014 Role Model of the Year by the Multicultural and International Student Association. Jennifer Jarreau was honored with the Alumni Association Outstanding Senior Award.
The convocation takes place each spring to honor the most active students at the university.
“Southeastern Louisiana University is deeply committed to the complete college experience for students and one crucial aspect are the programs provided by the Division for Student Affairs,” said Gallagher. “The Division for Student Affairs Convocation is one way to recognize and celebrate the involvement of Southeastern students in these programs.”
Those listed were just some of the many awards given to students and organizations at the 34th Annual DSA Award Convocation.
