The Contemporary Art Gallery is scheduled to host the Department of Visual Art + Design Juried Student Exhibition in March.
Gallery Director and Professor of Sculpture Dale Newkirk discussed why the exhibition is important to everyone involved.
“It’s an opportunity to see what our students are doing in the department,” said Newkirk. “They’ll be able to see a broad range of artwork from all the medias we teach here. So in that way, it’s a good barometer of the department and the activity that goes on here and the student’s hard work. Of course, this is a reflection of the jurors. There’ll be four jurors this time, two in graphic design and two in fine art. It’ll be a reflection of their opinions on what the best work is in the department based on what is submitted.”
The students have to take the initiative toward putting their work forward to be judged by jurors in this exhibition. The show will include a wide range of works that has been produced at the university in the department of visual art and design courses from the last two semesters.
“Juried means that a jury, so there’s outside professional artists, who are invited to review the work and actually pick what is in the artwork,” said Newkirk.
Some of the awards that will be given out at the event include The Best of All the Area award, Best Graphic Designer and Best Ceramicists.
The exhibition will be available for viewing from March 1 until March 29, with the reception scheduled to happen on March 1 from 5:00-7:30 p.m.
