President Obama dropped a bombshell when he came out as a supporter of gay marriage; I think I’ll do the same by coming out of the closet as a supporter of Obama.
I come from a family of strong political convictions, particularly on my mother’s side, and these convictions are all against the current presidency for various reasons. However, I do not share these convictions; though for a time I did. It’s common for political views to be shaped by those of family and close friends, but as I grew older and more independent and aware of the world around me, my views began to shift away from those held by my family.
It began, I think, with the death of Osama bin-Laden. While Obama didn’t go to Pakistan himself and track the lunatic down, I saw him then as a man who could direct action and accomplish what needed to be done. Then we finally left Iraq after almost a decade of occupation. To me this seemed unprecedented because after we “assist” a country, we almost always leave troops behind. Now the Iraqis can create their own destiny, for better or worse, without American intervention. And now we’re finally on track to leave Afghanistan.
But what I admire most is not what he has done abroad, but here at home. He has encouraged Americans to become more competitive with the rest of the world, because we have been resting on our laurels and our strength has dwindled in recent years. By encouraging and supporting American manufacturers, he has helped us get back on track to be a prosperous economy. But it’s important to recognize the bad along with the good.
While I support him, there are some things I do not agree with, the big one being the socialization of health care, a service that the federal government has no business being in. But I’m willing to overlook this because I have a feeling that it will eventually change and it allows me to stay on my parent’s coverage policy until I’m 25 years old.
For the upcoming presidential election, I’m certain that I will vote for Obama, not that voting Republican would be much of a change because Mitt Romney is very similar to Obama where policy is concerned. Again, I disagree with some of his actions and ideas, but I think he is definitely the lesser of two evils. So, my dear family whom I love, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I’m out of the closet; I support President Barack Hussein Obama.
