Libraries are a wonderful source of information and home to many tools to enhance one’s education or to learn about a new topic. From books to computer sources, the library is a great place to learn.
We all know that libraries are not only a place for helpful resources, but should also be a place of quiet, so visitors can have a good place to read and study. For most students on campus, the library is their main location to study. In fact, most of my peers on campus use the library on a daily basis. I am also one of the many who takes advantage of this useful location.
Although I am one of the many who uses the library on a daily basis, I am sad to say that it is hard for me to concentrate while working there. The main reason for this is due to the noise volume, inside and outside the library. I understand that there are a lot of students on campus, so no matter what, some noise level is still going to be there. However, I also have noticed that some students there are not using it as a quiet place. Instead, I have noticed many students use it as a place to loiter. Although I am typically not opposed to loitering in some public places such as a sidewalk in front of a grocery store, or a park, I do feel a library should not be a place where people hangout and be obnoxious. It should be kept as a respected quiet place, so people who do not have their own resources at home can still have a chance to have those resources along with a quiet place to study.
For example, many times I have sat by one of the computers to print out papers and do some quick research for a school project when all of a sudden, the person next to me pulls out their phone and has a casual 20 minute conversation with someone. Excuse me miss, but no one wants to hear about your romantic drama while they’re trying to do research on Picasso. Another example is the students who hangout in large crowds by the café. Yes, your voices do carry throughout the entire first floor. Lastly, it is the same loud group of people who hangout right outside the library doors everyday. I’m sorry, but that is what the union is for. Of course I am probably being a bit picky, or maybe even rude to call people out, but the majority of us did grow up in elementary school with our teacher telling us to be quiet in a library.
