As a last bash before the start of school, Southeastern athletics and the Division of Student Affairs hosted Strawberry Jam to end the week of Traditions and kick off the athletic season.
Strawberry Jam took place underneath the parking garage Tuesday, Aug. 20.
“I think this is pretty cool because every time I come and every time we come to the school, for us athletes it is something that brings us all together,” said tennis player Adriana Castillo.
The event opened with a pep rally and address by head football coach Ron Roberts, followed by an introduction of all the sports teams. Like Castillo mentioned, the student athletes from different sports were able to come together with the student body.
“I’m excited about sports,” said former Student Government Association President Branden Summers in the excitement of the pep rally. “I hear great things about the football team. My roommate is on the football team, and I’m looking forward to the season. Also, soccer will be in the Strawberry Stadium. I think that’s also excellent. Overall, I think it’s going to be a great year.”
Aside from joining many students to get excited for the school year and sports season, students could receive free pizza and a free T-shirt to be worn to football games.
“Always got to love free stuff,” said incoming freshman David Selders. “I heard there was going to be a Strawberry Jam, and a lot of people were coming. I wanted to be a part of it. Without all of this, I wouldn’t have met all the people I have met already, so it’s definitely a big step.”
Strawberry Jam proved to be an event which joined together the student body to transition back into the school year. As Selders mentioned, it was a great opportunity to meet new people and, according to Summers, reunite with old friends.
“I think Strawberry Jam is a great start to the year because it brings all the students together,” said Summers. “We haven’t seen each other all summer. The freshmen are here, so it’s a great jump into things. Everyone sees each other, they get involved and it’s a great experience.”
