Keaton Northington puts Tabasco on his red beans and rice at the 2015 annual Strawberry Jubilee. The event is hosted by Campus Activities Board and will be held on Apr. 13. The location of the event has yet to be determined.

The Campus Activities Board plans to bring variety and new ideas to its annual event to kick off the spring.

The strawberry themed event will be on Wednesday, Apr. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Strawberry Jubilee location will be determined at a later date. There will be free food and activities for students who attend.

Among the food items are red beans and rice, bread, cupcakes and soft drinks. Also, there will be strawberry shortcake.

This year, the Strawberry Jubilee has a different approach.

According to CAB, one of the new activities will be a Stuff-A-Lion. This activity is much like the stores where customers build their custom teddy bear. Students who do Stuff-A-Lion get to make their own lion.

There will also be a new Instagram printing activity.  According to CAB, when students take a picture at Strawberry Jubilee and put the given hashtag symbol on it, a printer will automatically print the picture for the student to take home.

Alpha Omicron Pi member and sophomore business administration major Anna Leader expects the Instagram activity to be popular.

“That will get a lot of people’s attention just that,” said Leader.

Leader said she was familiar with Gumbo Ya Ya and the inflatable activities involved in it. She said the different activities the CAB is offering for Strawberry Jubilee will be fun.

Strawberry Jubilee had a booth in previous years where people can make their own university stylized license plate. This year will have a similar booth which will make street signs instead.

Sophomore psychology major Hayden Kimball was satisfied with his previous experience at the event.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Kimball. “I really enjoyed myself. It was a great time.”

The origins of the Strawberry Jubilee are a mystery.  Previous CAB coordinator Todd McElroy said it was just a “Southeastern tradition that’s been here longer than I have” in a 2014 issue of “The Lion’s Roar.”

Campus organizations can set up a booth at Strawberry Jubilee.

Interested organizations can find the sign-up form on the Campus Activities Board’s page on the university website. CAB will provide chairs and tables, but the organizations must bring everything else. The deadline to complete the form is Apr. 4, 2016 at 5 p.m.
