Last Wednesday, Apr. 6 at 7 p.m. Greek Week/Month came to an end in the University Center as the teams stepped through the decades.

With the theme of the Decades, sororities and fraternities were grouped together to tackle a period. Representing the 60s were Alpha Sigma Tau, Kappa Sigma and Sigma Gamma Rho. Taking on the 70s were Alpha Omicron Pi and Theta Chi. Tackling the 80s were Phi Mu, Theta Xi and Zeta Phi Beta. Representing the 90s were Theta Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta. The final team of Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Tau Gamma and Omega Psi Phi took on the 2000s.

What was meant to be only a week’s worth of activities for the groups to participate in turned into nearly a month’s due to inclement weather throughout March and then Spring Break. Kappa Alpha Order member junior Justin Bankston shared his group used Spring Break as a time to relax rather than keep practicing.

“We practiced once after the flood,” said Bankston. “And right before we went on Spring Break we practiced one more time. We did not practice at all Spring Break. We came back Monday, we practiced and yesterday we practiced and that was it.”

If a team placed first, second or third in any contest they received points. First place received five points, second place received three points and third place received one point.

The Pie Eating contest took place Sunday, Mar. 6 at 4 p.m. The winners were announced at the Greek Week Wrap Up after Step Show. First place went to Phi Mu, Theta Xi and Zeta Phi Beta. Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Tau Gamma and Omega Psi Phi took second place. While Theta Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta took third.

The Sheet Sign Competition was judged in the Student Union Mall at 12 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 7.

Theta Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta took first place and received five points. Receiving three points for second place were Alpha Sigma Tau, Kappa Sigma and Sigma Gamma Rho. Ending in a tie and receiving one point each were the teams of Phi Mu, Theta Xi and Zeta Phi Beta and Alpha Omicron Pi and Theta Chi.

The final opportunity for the teams to boost their final scores was the Step Show Competition.

The teams were given a set of rules and had 10-12 minutes to impress the judges. Their performances must have included 5-6 minutes of step without the help of music. The judges based their score on style/appearance, choreography, stepping, overall performance, creativity and theme.

Freshman and Theta Phi Alpha member Kayla Thorne worried that her team would lack energy after the break.

“We were so pumped and ready,” said Thorne. “But it was just dragging on and we lost a little bit of our energy.”

The teams also had extra time to practice with Spring Break, but senior and President of Theta Phi Alpha Kaitlyn Carroll thinks her team lost something important.

“It [Spring Break] helps us because we had extra time to prepare,” said Carroll. “But on the other hand you lose momentum. Looking back I’m glad we had extra time to prepare because the step turned out great.”

After all the teams performed, the teams of Phi Mu, Theta Xi and Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Tau Gamma and Omega Psi Phi had to battle it out in a step-off. The rules were their step could not have music, exceed two minutes or repeat a previously performed step.

In the end, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Tau Gamma and Omega Psi Phi placed third adding one point to their final score, while Phi Mu, Theta Xi and Zeta Phi Beta placed second adding three points to their final total. In first place receiving five points were Theta Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta.

The awards and Greek Month finally wrapped up with the announcement of Overall Greek Week winners. Taking third place was Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Tau Gamma and Omega Psi Phi. In second place were Phi Mu, Theta Xi and Zeta Phi Beta. Finally with their take on the 90s, first place overall Greek Week winners went to Theta Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta.

Thorne experienced her first Greek Week/Month with her team’s victory.

“I was so excited,” said Thorne. “We all just jumped up and screamed and ran to the stage. It was the most amazing feeling because it was my first one, so it was a really great experience and being here tonight it was really fun.”
