    Fraternity awarded for service

The Epsilon Phi chapter of Delta Tau Delta fraternity members were recognized for their services to the campus, community and fellow man.

The award was the prestigious Hugh Shields Flag, a commendation that is bestowed for outstanding standards of operations, membership education, service and alumni relations. The Hugh Shields Flag is awarded to the top ten Delta Tau Delta chapters in the nation.

According to Philanthropy Committee Chair Christopher Hudspeth, Delta Tau Delta members must maintain high academic standards as well as perform extensive community service. The fraternity requires at least 25 hours of community service each semester, but Hudspeth noted that many members go beyond that.

“To see my chapter receive the Hugh Shields Award was an honor,” said Hudspeth. “I think that it was also rewarding because I know how hard we worked over the past year to earn it. It just goes to show that what we have here at Epsilon Phi is real and something not to take for granted. I truly love this organization and I was delighted when I heard that we won this year.”

Hudspeth also noted that while receiving the Hugh Shields Flag was an honor, he hopes the fraternity will continue its efforts.

“Although we are one of the top chapters nationally, we all realize that our work is not yet finished,” said Hudspeth. “We constantly work for the betterment of our chapter.  Our goals are to earn the Hugh Shields award again this coming year as well as be top philanthropists in the nation with our JDRF Clay Shoot.”

The Clay Shoot is an effort that will collect research funding and raise awareness for Juvenile Diabetes. Other philanthropy efforts include the Hammond Police Union Ball, working with lab schools in “Winter Carnival” and running in an annual 5K to raise funding for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. According to Hudspeth, Delta Tau Delta donated $6,000 to MADD the previous semester. The fraternity also hosted “Delta Tau Delta Dog Day for Tangi Humane Society” which raised funding for the society and helped facilitate adoptions for the animals at the event.

In alumni relations, the fraternity works to keep in touch with its former members. Current members have held multiple events in the past semesters for alumni, including football and softball games, Spring Formal, a Christmas Party and an Alumni Poker Night.

Hudspeth explained Delta Tau Delta currently has four members who are involved in SGA and two as members part of the Interfraternity Council. Last year, one Delta Tau Delta member was President of the Council.
