Student organizations with their tents pitched, Greek letters around the grassy area by Pottle, families tailgating and a parade around Friendship Circle were a few things that marked Family Day this past Saturday before the first home football game.
The tailgating is not the only thing that took preparation and hard work. With three different performances, entertainment for Family Day started working on routines and music before the school year started.
“Back in the second week of August is when we came to campus and started learning how to do pre-game and how to do halftime,” said Director of Athletic Bands Derek Stoughton.
The Southeastern Spirit of the Southland Marching Band performed with the cheerleaders and the Lionettes in front of Pottle, at the parade and at halftime.
“They’ve worked really hard and have done a lot of great work,” said Stoughton.
Among the tailgating, organizations and entertainment, there was a kids’ area. It included inflatables, stick-on tattoos, coloring sheets and games. One of the students working in this area was Senior English major Honore Conish.
“I think Family Day is important because Southeastern is more of a family community,” said Conish. “It brings out the best in everybody.”
Family Day did bring out the best in some as students realized the importance of family.
“I’m such a family person. I’d rather stay and hangout with them and do stuff with them than party and stuff,” said freshmen nursing major Madison Smith. “I want them to be a part of my freshmen year and actually all my college years.”
Other students were appreciative of Family Day because it stresses the importance of family.
“You are never alone,” said junior psychology major Katie Abadie. “No matter what situation you’re in, you’re going to have somebody you can depend on, even if you messed up really big.”
With every event running smoothly and family being a central theme, Family Day was a success.
