Game show played for more than just fun

Over 100 students, mostly from Greek organizations, assembled in the University Center Monday at 8 p.m. on March 11 to play in the Think Fast Game Show, an event held by the Campus Activity Board (CAB).
Participating students received a remote control during the game show, which allowed them to answer questions for their team.  Students split into many teams and together answered the variety of questions relating to drug and alcohol awareness, pop culture, sports, science and more.
Throughout the game show, facts about alcohol and drugs were presented to make students more aware. Creative names such as Snorks, Spartans, Dr. Evil, Magnum Pi, Lab Rats and Sugar Plums were picked for each team.
“The questions had a point to them and brought awareness of alcohol,” said Stephen Davis, a junior majoring in supplied chain management.
The questions asked revealed some of the most dangerous drugs, what stimulants can do to you and how alcohol affects a person. A variety of entertainment questions were spread throughout the game show as well. These include questions such as, “Where is Flo Rida from?” and “Taylor Swift was the voice of Audrey in which animated film?”
To add excitement to the night, a segment called “TJohnE’s Talent Contest” took place.  Four students competed by dancing to different songs, and another four students told their best pick-up lines. Kelsey Dunham won the dance contest and Toni Ranactore won the pick-up line contest.
“It was pretty fun,” said Davis. “Everyone seemed to have fun with it and interacted.  It brought people together.”
On a more serious note, students on each team were asked to anonymously answer alcohol and drug-related questions with a simple yes or no. When asked if they have ever driven under the influence of drugs or alcohol, 37 out of 60 said yes. When asked if they have ever used prescription drugs that were not theirs, 30 out of 60 said yes. When asked if they have friends who drink alcoholic beverages, 55 out of 60 said yes.
By fun and interactive means, students not only got to come and have fun together, but also became more aware of how drugs and alcohol change people’s behavior.
“What we’re trying to do this semester is really focus on the events we do have,” said Jacob Bellairs, a sophomore majoring in finance and a CAB employee, on the small number of CAB events this semester. “We’re not trying to spread our resources out everywhere.  Our biggest goal is to get a lot of people at the events we do have and put as much effort into those events as possible.”
