Student crashes into fence with vehicle

Last Thursday night, Aug.29, the Lion football team played a winning home opener game against the Southeast Missouri Redhawks and after the game, students began celebrating a little less responsibly. One student lost control of their vehicle and crashed into the fence at Alumni Field on N. General Pershing Street.
According to University Police Department Lieutenant Patrick Gipson, the incident happened late Thursday night/ early Friday morning.
“A vehicle left the roadway and struck the fence. The driver was not injured but was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated,” said Gipson.
A charge of DWI in the state of Louisiana (LA RS 14:98) brings a fine no less than $125 and no more than $500 and imprisonment for not less than 10 days nor more than six months; license suspended for 90 days.
The 2013-2014 student handbook drug and alcohol policy does allow alcoholic beverages on campus during tailgating for sporting events, but the standard code of conduct states many prohibitions, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Gipson had no comment as to the identity of the student.  Repair to the fence at Alumni Field has begun. If you witness an accident or drunk driver, contact the UPD at 549-2222.
