Greek Games play on through rain

The Greek Games were scheduled to take place on the field next to  the Alumni Center at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20. The location of the games changed last minute to the field next to the Pennington Center because of expected storms. The Greek Games are one of the first major events that take place during the annual Greek Week, in which Greek organizations are teamed up for a series of competitions.

Team One (Hades) consisted of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Tau Gamma and Theta Chi Fraternity; Team Two (Apollo) of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and Phi Beta Sigma; Team Three (Hermes) of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority, Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Team Four (Aphrodite) of Theta Phi Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; and Team Five (Poseidon) of Phi Mu Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Theta Xi Fraternity.

The relay race began as scheduled outside, but it was cut short by a sudden downpour. The Greek Games were taken inside, and after a few minutes of initial chaos, students were able to have their IDs swiped and get situated for the tug-of-war competition to begin inside.

“It’s Greek Week 2012 and it’s raining, so they moved us into the Pennington,” said Christopher Simoneaux, a marketing sophomore, while waiting in the Pennington. “Everybody has to swipe their ID to get in. We’re going to be on courts one and two to finish the games. It’s a little hectic because some people don’t have their IDs so they’re making them wait until everybody that has their card swipes. I’m sure once we get inside, everything will be fine and we can continue Greek Week.”

Simoneaux participated in the game of Ships and Sailors for his fraternity Delta Tau Delta and their team during the Greek Games.

Many members from each Greek organization were allowed to participate in Ships and Sailors, the latest addition to the Greek Games. SGA President Luke Holloway called out commands to the participants, and those who did not follow through with a command and follow the rules of the game were slowly eliminated.

Amanda Rivault, a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, was the winner of Ships and Sailors.

“Ships and Sailors is a new game they added to Greek Week, and I think it’s a fun way for all the Greeks to participate together,” said Rivault, a junior majoring in communication sciences and disorders. “It was a lot of fun!”

Whether it was to compete or to support their friends competing, everyone who came out to the Greek Games enjoyed the friendly competition and the exciting atmosphere that filled the Pennington Center.

“I think it was okay with the circumstances presented,” said Jared Magee, a biology senior who competed in the tug-of-war for Theta Chi fraternity. “I would like to commend the Order of Omega staff for handling a difficult situation to the best of their abilities, and I wish everybody that is participating in Greek Week good luck.”

Tim Reling, who is a member of Kappa Sigma, is part of the Order of Omega staff. The Order of Omega was in charge of refereeing all of the events during the Greek Games.

“I think the games went really well tonight,” said Reling, a senior studying psychology and criminal justice.  “The Ships and Sailors was the most organized part of it. Obviously we got rained out for part of the relay race, so we couldn’t really do as much as we wanted with that, but I feel that the games went really well overall.”

The clear winner in the Greek Games was Team Two, which consisted of Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Phi Beta Sigma and Sigma Gamma Rho. Team Two finished Greek Week in second place overall due to their wins in the Greek Games, Jambalaya and Baked Good Cook-Offs.
