    Females hold lead in fundraiser

On Feb. 1 the Lion’s Athletic Association (LAA) and RaceTrac partnered up for a fundraising event titled “Battle of the Sexes.”

The competition guidelines indicate that $2,000 will be donated in honor of the gender that uses their student ID most. The runner-ups will have $1,000 donated.

“Show their Southeastern ID when they check out and let the cashier know they want their purchase to go toward the ‘Battle of the Sexes,'” said Erin Cowser, executive director of public and governmental affairs. “All the registers have a male barcode and female barcode for the contest. The cashier simply scans the proper gender when they ring up the purchase.”

The parameters of the items that go towards the competition do not include gasoline, but does include items within the store such as food and drinks.

“When RaceTrac has hosted similar competitions with other schools, fuel wasn’t part of the contest. I would have to assume that since most fuel purchases are paid for at the pump, it would make the scanning of barcodes overly cumbersome,” said Cowser. “Also, I’m sure RaceTrac is hoping to increase its in- store traffic through the contest so it’s a win-win for both Southeastern and RaceTrac.”

The $3,000 that is to be donated in total to the Lions Athletic Association at the conclusion of the Battle of the Sexes competition will be split between the different sports teams.

“The winning gender will have it divided among their sports teams. Since the LAA is set up as a non-profit and can receive donations, the plan is to have the money donated to LAA and distributed from the LAA to the sports teams,” said Cowser.

After the competition has come to a close, the winning gender will be announced. However those plans are as of yet undecided.

“We haven’t made those specific arrangements yet, but we’ll certainly want to somehow incorporate the announcement into an Athletics event,” said Cowser.

As of Friday, March 23, females are taking the lead at 341 transactions applied at a total of $2,036, while males are further behind at 123 transactions applied to the total of $780.

Not satisfied with the current results?  There is still time to prove who is the dominant gender. The competition of “Battle of the Sexes” does not come to a close until April 30.
