Sims honored to host touring Lincoln Exhibit

The Linus A. Sims Memorial Library is hosting a traveling exhibit titled, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War.” The exhibit will be on display from Feb. 9 to March 25.

Abraham Lincoln was chosen as the highlight of the exhibit due to his reputation as one of America’s greatest Presidents. The exhibit focuses on answering the questions of Lincoln’s Constitutional struggle during the Civil War as well as Lincoln’s presidency. How Lincoln used our nation’s Constitution to back up his decisions in the time of crisis and war will also be recognized in the exhibit.

Several historical documents and events will be displayed throughout the library within the few weeks the exhibit is being held. Reproduced historical documents, such as Lincoln’s first inaugural speech and the Emancipation Proclamation, are showcased to all visitors.

The National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office organized the exhibit. The traveling exhibition was funded and made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War” is based on another exhibit, titled the same, created by the National Constitution Center.

According to Library Director Eric Johnson, it is an honor to have the exhibit presented at Southeastern.

“Sims is one of only 25 libraries in the United States selected to host the traveling event,” said Johnson. “We are delighted to have been selected as a site for this exhibition.”

Various events will take place throughout the exhibits present at Southeastern. The first major event takes place on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. when Lieutenant Governor, Jay Dardenne, speaks to serve as an opening ceremony for the exhibition.

Another featured speakers is Dr. Harry Laver, and he will speak on Lincoln’s struggle between himself and the Military Commanders of the Civil War at 2 p.m. on Mar. 16. The closing ceremony for the exhibit will be held on Mar. 24 at 2 p.m. on the third floor of Sims Library.

Feb. 24 will be a day for local area schools to come to Southeastern’s campus and experience the exhibit as well. Interested schools are asked to RSVP to Assistant Access Services Librarian Kathryn Munson at [email protected] or 985-549-2340.
