Hammond has undergone a recent law change now allowing alcohol to be sold on Sundays in stores. This does not include bars.
Many places, including Hammond’s neighbor Springfield, permit alcohol to be sold on Sundays. A little behind the current times, Hammond was holding to the older way of not selling alcohol on a day designated as holy. Most, though, supported this new law change.
“I think it’s up to you if you want to buy alcohol on Sundays, so if they make it to where it’s your choice, then I guess it’s a good thing because we need more of a choice,” said Reagan Binning, junior nursing major.
The ability of legal aged people to buy alcohol on Sundays seemed to be a common theme in many opinions about the matter.
“I can’t wait to buy liquor on Sunday,” said Tim Martin, kinesiology major graduate. “If you’re old enough you should be able to do what you want when you want.”
According to WAFB news, retailers are on board with the alcohol ban being lifted by the city council.
Since Hammond area shops could not sell alcohol for an entire day, many shoppers would simply shop at another store so as to not have to go to two different stores.
One retailer argued that changing the liquor law would bring tax dollars back to Hammond. Council Chairman Jason Wood commented that not one person called and asked him to vote to keep the law, but many called and asked him to vote to change it.
Legal age citizens will now be able to stop by the local store for a quick drink before Saints Games.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Ward 4 Coucilman Bobby Martin, the only person to vote against the ordinance, said, “I didn’t see one positive thing from saying yes. To do this for revenue wasn’t enough. I don’t think the revenue this will generate is worth the temptation people will face. I think six days a week is sufficient. We should be able to take one day off.”
