Kappa Nu engages students during annual Alpha Week

The Kappa Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. held Alpha Week which included events around campus such as a Women’s Appreciation Program, Operation Restoration for males only, the Gold Train Awards, a pRHOtection before aPHection panel and ended with the Old Gold Grandeur Alpha Ball.

Alpha week was held from March 16 to March 21.

President of Kappa Nu’s chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Thomas Moore, highlighted each event.

“Sunday, we went to church Beacon Light. Monday, we had our women’s appreciation at the alumni center, appreciating the women for working hard and being successful. Tuesday, we had an event geared toward the males to get them more active on campus, and let them know how to be active on campus. Wednesday, we had our Gold Train Awards. The gold train awards are almost like the Grammys. We put a poll on the social network and got votes and likes for different categories,” said Moore. “We are going to award the winners along with a train like an alpha competition where we let the ladies of Southeastern do moves and things like us [alphas], mock us in a sense. Thursday will be our sex talk pRHOtection before aPHection and that’s a partner up with Sigma Gamma Rho sorority incorporated. Friday is our Old Gold Grandeur, that’s our Alpha ball. It is the second year we brought it back after thirty years. It is to celebrate the life of our fraternity on this campus. And, it is to mingle, network and socialize with our fellow peers.”

The Old Gold Grandeur Alpha Ball was the last event on the agenda during Alpha week and held on Friday, March 21.

According to Moore, the ball was a huge success.

“The Ball was great. Everything fell into place as planned and everything went smoothly,” said Moore.

Moore explained where the theme for the ball came from.

“The Grandeur means splendor and impressiveness. We wanted everybody to bring out their best dresses and tuxedos and demonstrate sophistication and class,” said Moore.

The expectations of the Alpha Ball were high, but Moore said the outcome surprised him.

“Looking back at the guest list, there were over 150 people in attendance. The support from the campus and other brothers was outstanding,” said Moore.

Students in attendance loved the ball.

Kelonda Dixon, freshman graphic design major said, “The ball was classy and elegant with great food and music. I had a great time and I will be in attendance next year.”

Other students were totally in awe and had a great time during the event.

Chrystal Cavalier, freshman psychology major said, “I absolutely loved the ball and was so happy of how much the Alpha’s put into this. I had a great time and I loved everything about tonight.”

Moore was impressed by the students’ support at the ball.

“[The support] showed us that the students appreciate our hard work on campus,” said Moore. “I’ll be looking forward to attending the ball next spring as an alumni brother, of course.”
