Students seek work at part-time job fair

Job-seeking students flocked to the fall part-time job fair held in the Student Union Mall on Aug. 25.  Employers were prepared to answer questions about available positions as well as identify prospective employees.  The job fair, which was held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., aimed to help job seeking students meet potential employers.

The job fair hosted many different employers ranging from Bass Pro Shops to Mary Kay Cosmetics.  These employers braved the heat for many hours to interact with Southeastern students about the positions they were offering.

Students browsed the promotional materials offered by the employers as well as spoke with many representatives about potential opportunities. Over 40 employers were represented at the job fair.  These employers spanned each discipline  and offered internships and part time jobs, as well as volunteer positions.

“We actually made it to 41 employers registering,” said Keri Truitt, assistant director of Career Services. “We think we are successful if we get anywhere between 40-45 employers and because of space constraints we max out at 45.”

Some of the represented employers included the United States Navy, Papa John’s Pizza, City Year Louisiana, Leblanc’s Food Stores, New Bath, Waffle House, Princeton Review, Safari Quest Family Fun Center, United States Air Force Reserve and Maurice’s.

The Office of Career Services, the host of the event, was also present registering employers and passing out flyers to students with a listing of the represented employers.

“We have a good variety that are local and regional, and we have a variety of different types of positions, so we feel like we have something for most majors,” said Truitt. “We also feel like we have a good variety of part-time and internships.”

Northwestern Mutual was one of the employers present and looked to hire approximately 10 students from Southeastern as interns of the 50-60 interns hired by the company statewide.  Approximately 17 students had already applied for the available positions.

“It’s a great way to meet with the students and do a little bit of marketing for the company,” said Katherine Dantin, a representative of Northwestern Mutual.

Some students may have been expecting more professional options to be represented at the part-time job fair.

“We thought it would be more internship based,” said Elizabeth George, a senior majoring in supply chain management.

Students looking for more employment opportunities can attend the Career Fair on Sept. 21.  The Career Fair will be more formal, lasting from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Pennington Student Activity Center.  This fair will focus more on post graduation professional jobs, and students are expected to attend professionally dressed and with an updated resume.
