Phi Kappa Phi chapter receives honor

Southeastern’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was recently named a Chapter of Merit. This award is given to the chapter that meets or exceeds certain criteria that has been established by the national office. The award, which was presented in Kansas City, MO at the organization’s national biennial convention, is given to the chapter that best excels and promotes academic excellence in all fields of education and engages the community scholars in service to other individuals.

“Southeastern’s chapter is being recognized as a thriving organization that meets frequently, holds annual imitations, sends representatives to designated trainings, and applies regularly for Phi Kappa Phi’s select scholarships, grants, and fellowships,” said Stuart Stewart, executive director of Louisiana Campus Compact.

By winning this award the group earned both themselves and the university several benefits including a Presidential Citation, commendation letters sent to the chapter officers and campus administration, recognition on the society’s website, publications and at conventions; and $100, which the chapter chose to donate towards scholarship funds and communications during the year.

The chapter was very excited to receive this recognition.

“Our officers were thrilled to win this award as it places our chapter in a tier of only 19 universities in the nation to receive the Chapter of Merit,” said Stewart. “We have an outstanding Executive Committee comprised of faculty and staff who are dedicated to the promotion of the love of learning by all. They are to be commended for their hard work in ensuring that our chapter recognizes academic excellence in a way that meets the eligibility requirements for this prestigious award.”

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine. The Southeastern chapter was founded in 1956. It is the nation’s largest, oldest, and most selective honor society. There are over 300 chapters in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

Eligibility requirements include: juniors must have completed 72 credit hours and rank in the top 7.5% of their class, seniors must rank in the top 10% of their class, graduate seniors must rank in the top 10% of their class and faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also may be eligible for membership

The purpose of the group is to promote and recognize academic excellence, encourage applications for both national and local awards for achievement, and engage community members to help others.
