    Students ‘Get Soaked!’ with PEEPS

Recreation Innovative Programming People Excited and Dedicated (R. I. P. P. E. D.), a part of Recreation Sports and Wellness, and PEEPS sponsored the outdoor event “Get Soaked!” in front of the Pennington Student Activity Center on Wednesday, April, 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. “Get Soaked!” included an inflatable water slide, homemade slip-n-slide, obstacle course, dunk booth and free crawfish.
“I think this is the perfect event because it kind of brings out everybody,” said Tina Nguyen, a sophomore majoring in biology.
“It’s Wednesday, everybody has classes, but they can just unwind for a little bit, even if it’s just for two hours. They can come out, get some crawfish. We got cool water slides. You can dunk somebody, like me. I think with finals right around the corner it’s a great way for everyone to have fun before everybody hits the books.”
Nguyen, who is a student worker with the Rec, was one of the victims of the dunk booth.
“I was joking about getting in the dunk booth, but they threw me in there and it’s not that bad,” said Nguyen. “I love teasing everybody who tries to dunk me. I love it because I work intramurals and a lot of them play sports, so I know who plays volleyball, who plays basketball, and if they can’t throw, I tease them.”
The dunk booth was a popular aspect of the event.
Holden Duke, a freshman majoring in kinesiology, said the dunk booth was more difficult than most people would think, and his favorite part of “Get Soaked!” was the water slide.
“I would have expected more people,” said Duke. “This is pretty fun.”
The turnout was decent considering many students came, received a wristband, picked up their free crawfish and left the area.
“This crawfish is the best crawfish ever,” said Shanicia Harris, a junior majoring in finance. “Southeastern is great.”
In addition to the food and water activities, students were able to participate in an obstacle course sponsored by Peers Educators Educating Peers at Southeastern (PEEPS).
“The obstacle course is for students to participate wearing the drunk goggles to show how alcohol actually affects you,” said Veronica Wynn, a senior double majoring in biology and health education and promotion.
Wynn said for the course PEEPS provided two pairs of “drunk goggles”: one with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.17 to 0.20 and the other with a BAC of 0.07 to 0.10.
“These show how alcohol affects you at different levels,” said Wynn. “One drink is moderate drinking for females, and two drinks is moderate drinking for males. It just shows how you can lose your balance and how that can easily translate to drinking and driving, so we’re encouraging people to have a designated driver or to not [drink] at all.”
Wynn said that there were several students who came back to the obstacle course repeatedly during “Get Soaked!”
