Fraternities, sororities shine in front of NPHC

Several of Southeastern’s fraternities and sororities will be putting their best foot forward Wednesday, Feb. 16 for the annual National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Greek showcase. Sorority and fraternity members will be providing information about their organizations, as well as providing entertainment such as poetry readings and a step show.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for an informational browse about the different Greek organizations. The event will be held in the Student Union Theater at 7 p.m. and is free for all those who wish to attend.

All fraternities and sororities participating are members of the NPHC, which consists of nine historically African-American sororities and fraternities, brought together on the campus of Howard University in 1930.

“This event is sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council on SELU’s campus in order to provide the student body with an opportunity to learn about the history and social attributes of the campus’ historically black fraternities and sororities,” said senior and Kappa Alpha Psi president Jerel Butler.

Butler will be one of the many giving information on the history and pageantry of his organization. Students will also be showcasing awards given to them for hard work and dedication in their organizations, the community and also the student body.

President of Southeastern’s Pan-Hellenic Council, Christopher Robinson, called the NPHC a “communication tool for these sororities.”

When asked what the event meant to him, Robinson said, “I’m just happy to see we have an abundant amount of fraternities and sororities on campus and that they’re able to come together for the same purpose.”

The official mission statement of the NPHC is “unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.”

The NPHC evolved during a time period when African-Americans were being denied rights and privileges afforded to other college students.

“The showcase is very meaningful in my eyes,” said Butler. “It gives the students a chance to learn about the history and traditions of the historically black fraternities and sororities, which in turn helps us to appreciate Black History Month a little more.”

Students are also invited to an after-party in the Student Union Ballroom at 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. A disk jockey will be provided, and the cost of getting in is $5.
