The Social Work Club is currently holding a Pop-a-Tab fundraiser, and when a 5-gallon water bottle is filled with soda can tabs, the club will be able to pay for one chemotherapy treatment for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
According to club president Jasper Collor, collecting soda can tabs to pay for a chemotherapy treatment was the Vice President Tuneea Magee’s idea and, as soon as the club heard about it, they wanted to start collecting immediately.
“Two of Southeastern University’s core values are ‘service’ and ‘caring,’ values that are exemplified by this fundraising effort,” said Dr. Corie Hebert, faculty advisor of the Social Work Club. “Even if we only fill one water bottle that will pay for one cancer treatment, we have reached out to an individual in the community and tried to help. To me, this connection to and support for the local community is what sets Southeastern apart. We welcome all the help we can get towards our efforts.”
Collor, a senior social work major, said that this fundraiser is relevant to all Southeastern students because everyone knows somebody who has suffered from cancer, and this is something that everyone can do to help.
The Pop-a-Tab water bottle is currently about half-full, and the Social Work Club will continue collecting soda can tabs until the bottle is full. The bottle is located in White Hall, room 114.
In addition to the Pop-a-Tab fundraiser, the Social Work Club is doing several other service projects and fundraisers.
“We are collecting items such as pencils, stickers and coloring books to make goody bags to donate to Options, which is a program that allows people with disabilities to work on SLU’s campus,” said Collor. “The social work club wants to make a difference and change lives.”
The club is also currently holding a raffle for Tripp Roth in which they are raffling off clocks for $1 each and is still accepting donations. They are also collecting socks and underwear to donate to Hope House.
“The Social Work Club is a developing club that has really grown in the last two years,” said Collor. “We want to experience things and help those who we may be working with in the field. Our club is very tight knit and work together to accomplish as many goals as we can. We continue to practice ‘Social Work-N-Action.'”
