    BSU hosts speed dating

The Black Student Union (BSU) held a Valentine’s Day edition of a game show called “The Dating Game” on Feb. 9 in the Student Union Ballroom. This was one of the first events of the year for BSU and was successful for the organization.

Participants were asked to bring a canned good to get a dollar off of the entry fee of $3.  BSU often incorporates donating canned goods in their events.  The goods are donated to the Tangipahoa Food Pantry in order to help out the local people in need.

The night started out with those in attendance mingling with one another and getting ready for the fun in store while BSU officers set up the stage and the rest of attendees slowly arrived due to  rainy weather conditions. The turnout was not as large as past events, but the night was still successful.

The game was conducted like a standard dating game. A guest was chosen to ask questions and choose from three different potential daters, depending on how he or she reacted to the answers they received. In the first round, a female guest was chosen to choose from three guys.

The female’s name was Marjorie Parker, and she was asked to share some information about herself.  She shared with the audience that she was a senior graduating next semester with a degree in theatre.  Parker will be moving to New York soon after graduation to pursue her dreams and get a masters in theatre.

She kicked off her round with, “What is your best pick up line?” Contestant number three bravely answered with, “If I’m interested in you, I’m just going to be honest and say that I would like to spend some time and get to know you better.”

The crowd and Parker seemed to love that answer.  The round continued with various questions like, “What are some of your best qualities?” “Where do you see yourself in five years?” and “If I was trapped in a burning building, would you run in and save me?” The answers provided by the contestants on this question were funny, but none topped contestant number three’s answer. “I’ve been hitting the gym a lot, so I’d run in, kick down the door and sweep you off your feet.” After this answer, the crowd and Parker had an easy decision to make. Number three, who was chosen as the winner was Jared Jackson, a junior majoring in mass communication.

Another chance to mingle followed the first round and BSU provided food for the event.  Sandwiches, cupcakes and heart shaped candy was presented for those in attendance.

BSU also made sure to set the mood for the evening with the decorations.  The tables were covered in pink and red, heart shaped balloons were tied from chairs and conversation heart candy was scattered everywhere.

The night provided good laughs and great fun. BSU hopes to be hosting a karaoke night within the next month, so those interested in that event or any other BSU news, individuals can contact Lorrianne Lucas at [email protected].
