The Lion's Roar

    Good morning, Robin!

Producers from ABC’s Good Morning America made a visit to campus last week to film a television spot for a segment entitled, “Back to College Week.”
Each GMA co-host will have their alma mater highlighted on the morning show as they remember their college days. Students, cheerleaders, Lionettes, Roomie and Lady Lion basketball members came out to Friendship Circle to cheer on Southeastern alumnae and GMA co-host Robin Roberts.
According to Barbara Schmitt, the GMA producer who made the trip to Hammond with her camera crew. Though the day they chose to come to campus was a cloudy, hot and muggy one, Schmitt says it relays much better on camera.
“The campus is just beautiful,” said Schmitt.
Lions cheerleader Kaylee George led the group in a roaring cheer for the segment. George is accustomed to representing Lion pride at sporting events, but to do it on a national scale was an honor.
“Southeastern is a university like no other. We are a family, and I am extremely proud to be a part of sharing that with the rest of the country,” George said. “We all owe a big thank you to GMA for giving us the opportunity to share a little of our Lion Nation with all of America, as well as Robin Roberts for being one of the best role models and supporters this university has ever seen.”
Senior forward for the Lady Lions basketball Aja Gibson came out with her team to show support for Roberts, who was a Lady Lion once herself. Ironically, though Roberts played basketball, she came to Southeastern on a tennis scholarship.
“Robin Roberts is just a phenomenal woman, and I am
honored to represent the school that she attended,” said Roberts.
Using marrow donated by her sister Sally Ann Roberts, Roberts recently went through a bone marrow transplant and left GMA for a year. She returned to work six months ago on a four-day work week and now Roberts returns to a full, five-day work week.
    “We’re so excited,” said Schmitt.
Roberts’s anniversary of her bone marrow transplant is close, Sept. 20, and returning to work full-time is a goal she has never let out of reach. In an interview with People Magazine, Roberts said, “I’m looking forward to it. I want to get back to my full life.”
