    Student organizations hold information browse

As students and faculty walked through the Student Union Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, they found themselves amongst many organizations that set up booths, including flyers and showcases. These showcases included images and articles of specific qualities and events they provide.

Among the organizations, under the comfort of the Student Union canopy, were the SGA (Student Government Association),  Alpha Omicron Pi,  Kappa Sigma,Theta Phi Alpha,Phi Mu, SLC (Southeastern Leadership Conference),Southeastern Gospel Choir, Social Workclub and SELUSHAN (Southeastern Secular Humanist and Agnostic Network).

Members of sorority Alpha Omicron Pi were eager to brand on-goers with stickers.

After being asked what applicants who are interested in joining would get out of the sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi member Melanie Seal, said, “An amazing experience with amazing girls, have sisters and lifelong friends.” She also said her and the members do a lot of community service that is a lot of fun.

“This is my second semester [in the sorority]. I mean I just made so many new friends and have gotten much more comfortable on campus,” said Seal.

Although sororities and fraternities covered a mass of the organizations, there were a few that could stand alone.

Brooke Ory, also a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, said, “I think they are all pretty interesting. Obviously already being in a sorority, I can’t be in any of the other ones.” Ory further said she would definitely be interested in looking into SGA.  She remained humble to other organizations stating, “I wouldn’t say join mine but I would say go through recruitments and see where you belong.” “Not everyone belongs to the same place.”

Among the organizations that could stand alone was SELUSHAN.

“We’re more of a social group with the idea of open dialogue on concepts of atheism, agnosticism, secular humanism, with students, the student body and other groups,” said Dwayne Bordelon, an active member of SELUSHAN, and political science major.  The group has established a forum in order to advocate equal rights among non-theists and has meetings every other week including debates and documentary screenings.

“We believe that everybody is entitled to their opinion, everybody is entitled to their own beliefs,” said Bordelon. “We’re a place where you can come and have open discussion about them.”

“Basically it’s a free thinker, secular humanist group,” said Issac Leblanc, also a member of SELUSHAN. “I mean not all atheists are agnostic; we even have like a jewish guy in there.”

Once a parade of students had reached the event, so did Till1, a local hip-hop artist, who sang a few songs from his single, “Finest Thang.”

After being asked what he thought of the performance, Kappa Sigma member, David Kives, said, “It was interesting.” “It was good, I enjoyed it.”
