Award season approaches as Student Affairs convocations begin

As the end of the semester approaches, many departments across campus are preparing to honor hard-working students and alumni at various awards programs.
The 33rd annual Division for Student Affairs Award Convocation will take place on Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in Twelve Oaks. The 2013-14 Student Government Association officers will be inaugurated, and many students will be awarded for their hard work in classes, student organizations and the local community. One of the largest awards of the night will be the Outstanding Man and Woman of the Year awards.
“The Division for Student Affairs Outstanding Man and Woman Awards are presented annually to individuals that have made outstanding contributions to the university and have outstanding personal characteristics, such as integrity and leadership,” said Cherie Kay Thriffiley, the director of the Office for Student Engagement.
Students can be nominated for this prestigious honor by administrators, faculty, staff or a recognized student organization’s president if they meet certain requirements.
“A committee of representatives from a variety of areas on campus will be evaluating the applications and making the selection of recipients,” said Thriffiley.
Another major program is the annual Southeastern Ring Ceremony, which is a collaborative event put on by the Division of Student Affairs and the Alumni Association. President John L. Crain will present rings to students on Wednesday, May 1.
The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Honors Convocation will be held Monday, May 6 at 1 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.
The College of Education Honors Convocation will be held on Tuesday, May 7 at 11 a.m. in the Student Union Theater.
The College of Science and Technology Honor Convocation will be held on Tuesday, May 7 at 4 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.
“We will be giving awards for the Outstanding Graduating Senior in each of our majors,” said Sabrina Anzalone, administrative assistant for the College of Science and Technology. “The students will not know they are receiving the awards until the day of the ceremony.”
The College of Business Honors Convocation will be held on Thursday, May 9 at 2 p.m. in the Student Union Theater. Distinguished graduates from each degree program and the college’s Distinguished Alumnus will be honored at the ceremony.
“The Distinguished Alumnus is someone who has used their degree to achieve success,” said Dr. Antoinette Phillips, the interim assistant dean of the College of Business. “The College of Business Distinguished Alumnus for this year is Mr. Angelo Distefano, owner of Angelo’s Lawn-Scape of Louisiana.”
The College of Nursing and Health Sciences Honors Convocation will be held on May 9 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.
