    CAB movie night receives upgrade

Big changes are happening to the on-campus activity, Movie on the Big Screen. The event, put on by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), has been popular with students in the past. On Jan. 27, CAB presented the feature “Due Date,” a comedy starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. The movie was chosen through a vote among the members of CAB.

“We wanted to show a movie that is pre-released,” said CAB Coordinator Jason Leader, “One that isn’t available to the public.”

Swank Motion Pictures, Inc., a non-theatrical movie distributor, supplied the film for this event.

This semester, it was decided that there would be a matinee showing at 1 p.m. and an evening showing at 8 p.m.

“This will hopefully better serve commuter students,” said Leader.

The event also took place in a new location, the Student Union Theater. The change in venue was because of the brand new surround sound system in the room that was purchased by the Student Government Association (SGA).

Though the midday showing was attended by only a handful of students, they were happy to have something fun to do during a break between classes.

“I went to this one because I don’t have class until 3:30,” said Lee Balius, a communication freshman, “And I figured it was a good way to pass the time. I wanted to see this movie.”

The evening showing, however, catered to many more students, and the choice of movie was popular with those in attendance.

“I wanted to witness the shenanigans of Zach Galifianakis,” said graphic design senior, Taylor Boudreaux.

Rather than pizza like in the past, the more traditional movie snacks of popcorn, candy and drinks were free for all those who attended. And, as always, the event itself was free of charge.

“I came because it was free and that’s better than paying $15 to go to the movies,” said Teresa Burkett, a senior majoring in English.

CAB has recently partnered with the grocery store Piggly Wiggly and used this event to unveil their new promotion, called “Pig Out With CAB.” When a student attends one of the organization’s events, he or she will be given a punch card.

For each CAB activity, their card will be punched, each one holding five punches. When it is filled, the card can be handed in and entered into a drawing to win a $250 gift card to Piggly Wiggly. CAB will be hosting a new activity every week and all students are encouraged to come out and start getting punches.
