    Kappa Sigmas recognized

Recently two Kappa Sigmas, Cory Young, a senior majoring in marketing, and Luther (Luke) Holloway, a senior majoring in social studies education, were awarded for scholarship, academic involvement and leadership at Southeastern. The awards were given through the national Kappa Sigma endowment fund.

Young received the Certificate of Merit, while Holloway received the Thomas E. Autzen scholarship/award. The scholarship amount was $1,000.

“It was definitely humbling,” said Holloway. “Throughout my interactions with Kappa Sigma nationally, I have seen the caliber of men that the fraternity is able to produce. To be awarded a scholarship among my fellow Kappa Sigma brothers nationally is quite an honor.”

In 2010, only 45 of around 700 applicants were given named Kappa Sigma awards such as the Thomas E. Autzen award, and 100 people were awarded the Certificate of Merit. Awards are given out annually.

Freshman and Kappa Sigma member Reagan Phelps commented on his fraternity brothers’ success.

“[Luke’s] mainly just a hard worker,” said Phelps. “He’s done so much for fraternity events like fundraisers. You can call anytime, and he’ll go out of his way to help.”

Both Young and Holloway are highly involved on campus, and both are one of the founding fathers of Southeastern’s Kappa Sigma.

This is Holloway’s second time receiving the Thomas E. Autzen scholarship, and he plans to put the funds towards a savings account for school next semester. When asked what the funds meant for him specifically as a student, he said, “I definitely thank the Lord for opening up the door to Kappa Sigma. I am continually amazed by His blessing in my life.”

Young is a former president of Kappa Sigma as well as their 2009 Man of the Year. Holloway described him as always being very involved at Southeastern and in the fraternity.

“Everything I’ve been able to accomplish, he’s been able to do that and more,” said Holloway.

The Kappa Sigma endowment fund is strictly made up of charitable contributions, and since 1947, more than $4.5 million has been awarded to thousands of Kappa Sigma scholarship beneficiaries.
