The Greek Award Convocation took place on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the Student Union Theatre. At the award ceremony, young men and women from Southeastern’s sororities and fraternities were honored for their efforts through the year of 2011. Members of the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Panhellenic Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) were recognized for their efforts throughout in regards to GPA and community service.
Beth Richardson, the coordinator of the Student Government Association (SGA), started the ceremony off by announcing the award for the 2011 Outstanding Gamma Chi of the year, which went to Laura Gonzales of the Phi Mu Fraternity. A Gamma Chi is someone chosen to assist during formal recruiting. The 2011 Outstanding Gamma Chi Group award went to Katie Secott of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity, Taylor Heikes of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and Carollen Delaney of Theta Phi Alpha Sorority. Hayley Arceneaux of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority was awarded the 2011 Outstanding Panhellenic Member.
The 2011 Outstanding Panhellenic New Member award was given to Katherine Weimer of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity. The esteemed award of Outstanding Panhellenic Chapter went to the ladies of Alpha Sigma Tau, who have also been Greek Week champions for the past two years.
The NPHC, consisting of the African American Greek Organizations, was also recognized in the ceremony. The NPHC senior delegates were acknowledged for their academic efforts. The Outstanding Pan-Hellenic Delegates were Kellie Wallace of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Toshia Jackson of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Avery Hinyard-Tate of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The most outstanding chapter award for the NPHC went to the ladies of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
For the men, awards were given to the Outstanding Rho Gamma, Outstanding IFC chapter and there was also a Community Service award. In the Interfraternity Council, the 2011 Outstanding Rho Gamma of the Year was Patrick Amie of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, and the Outstanding IFC Chapter award was granted to the men of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.
Delta Tau Delta was also given the 2011 Community Service Award.
The highest award of the night was in distinguishing the chapters with the highest GPA for the year of 2011. The Panhellenic Academic Award was given to the ladies of the Phi Mu Fraternity. Together they earned a 3.147 GPA. In the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Panhellenic Academic Award was presented to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity with a GPA of 2.98. The men of the Kappa Alpha Order walked away as the Interfraternity Council Academic Award this year, with a group GPA of 2.774.
