    Greeks begin spring recruiting

Spring recruitment is already underway for Southeastern’s Greek community. The recruitment process in the spring is more informal compared to the major recruiting put forth in the fall semester.

The Greek community is divided into three sections, the Interfraternity Council, also known as fraternities, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the historical African-American Greek letter organizations and the Panhellenic Council, also known as sororities. Each have their own specific set of requirements and recruiting processes.  Southeastern does however have a set of requirements for anyone interested in participating, which includes being a full-time student with the minimum of 12 hours and a cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

Southeastern’s Greek community consists of 19 chapters.

“We have a cohesive group and community, in which all rivalries are healthy and all bond together because it is such a small community,” stated Beth Richardson, assistant director for student engagements.

Every Greek chapter at Southeastern advertises their chapters by the use of sheet signs and information booths in the War Memorial Student Union, special events and social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

“I believe that recruiting is effective,” said Christopher McKinley, senior organizational communication major. “Each Greek organization gets to display their accomplishments past and present, and express their passion behind their philanthropy and what they each work to achieve.”

The upcoming events for spring recruitment include the National Pan-Hellenic Council Showcase that will take place on Feb. 28 in the Student Union Theater and Greek week, which is scheduled for Mar. 19-23.

“To anyone unsure of participating in sorority or fraternity recruitment, I would encourage them to research the Greek organizations offered on campus and consider what they have to offer you, and what you have to offer them as well,” said Hayleigh Broome, sophomore criminal justice major and Membership Recruitment Director for Sigma Sigma Sigma. “Greek organizations significantly enrich one’s college experience in that most organizations pride themselves on esteemed moral character, contributing to the community we live in, and promoting involvement within the school we attend. Being a member of a sorority or fraternity also develops strong leadership skills and builds many life-long friendships along the college journey.”
